I had hoped that my kitchen remodeling project would now be complete. Like most remodeling projects, the inevitable unexpected turn of events happen. Nevertheless, I thought I would post pictures taken Thursday, June 3, 2010 and prior. I am still waiting for the correct drawer and door fronts to come in, counter top installation, appliances installed to become functional.

You can follow other blog posts from the beginning of the kitchen remodel project and follow the progress:

Old Kitchen- ” before” remodeling pictures,

Pictures of the plans for the new kitchen.

Moving to my “camp kitchen.”

What a Mess, Kitchen Demolition Continues.

Structural changes, stairway remodel, floor leveling, electrical, dry wall, and painting dominated the last six weeks of remodeling work. I had workmen at my home almost every day. Sometimes it was like a “three ring circus” juggling everyone.

After the painting and flooring projects were completed a week ago, I began to SEE that what I have been working towards for nearly a year is beginning to take shape and I’m getting excited!

Badly bowed floor had to be shimmed and leveled before plywood subfloor could be installed.

Old Stairway above – you can see the exposed “studs” in the kitchen if you look hard. New stairway is beautiful and has already received many compliments.

These are the base cabinets looking towards the kitchen from my desk area. The cabinet doors and drawer fronts will be replaced with knotty rustic alder as soon as they become available. That was one unexpected “surprise” last week. The second picture is looking at the island from the living room area. We picked black to tie in the black mortar in the brick fireplace.

This picture gives the bigger picture of the new kitchen area and shows off my new hardwood floors. I already baptized the flooring with a huge gouge the first day they were installed. The Norwex Dry Superior Mop is absolutely awesome for cleaning up after workman and going over a large flooring area.

A few other surprises last week included moving the “roughed in” lighting cans in the ceiling which had to be moved so the cabinets wouldn’t cover them. Glad it was all fixable.

My counter tops are being fabricated this week and appliances should be delivered sometime before the upper cabinets go in.

Bonus Lesson: Nuts & Seeds

In this bonus lesson for How to Cook Real Food, the online cooking class hosted at Nourished Kitchen, you’ll receive a quick, sneak-peak into the cooking class through this brief video covering how to properly prepare nuts and seeds including recipes for a basic pesto sauce and a basic fruit and nut snack bar. Please note that videos in the online cooking class will be more comprehensive than the brief look at nuts and seeds you see below here.

In this video and using these downloadable print materials.

Preparing Nuts and Seeds Traditionally

Nuts and seeds can be a powerfully nutritive food: rich in minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. However, as is the case with many foods, nuts and seeds are also potent sources of antinutrients: particularly food phytate which binds up minerals preventing their full absorption and enzyme inhibitors which makes them difficult to digest. Fortunately, the simple act of soaking nuts and seeds in slightly salty water overnight improves not only their digestibility but also the availability of minerals naturally found in these foods.

Combining unrefined sea salt with warm, filtered water and pouring this salty mixture over your nuts or seeds provides optimal conditions to help mitigate the effects of these two antinutrients. Leaving the nuts or seeds to soak overnight in warm, salty water, you’ll not only improve the nutrient profile of these foods, but also their texture. They become softer and, for this reason, are well-suited to cooking and using in sauces like classic pesto, fruit and nut bars, breads and other dishes. If you have a food dehydrator, you can even dry the nuts or seeds after soaking to make a delicious snack.

In this Bonus Lesson, you’ll learn:

Why nuts and seeds prove valuable additions to a nourishing, healthy and wholesome diet.

How to prepare nuts and seeds to maximize nutrition and digestibility.

How to make a basic pesto using nuts or seeds, herbs and greens and an unrefined oil.

How to save money making a basic dried fruit and nut bar featuring dates, dried fruit and soaked nuts.

Are you longing for the ultimate help in raising your children whether you home educate or not? I homeschooled full-time my three children for 19 years. The two oldest are homeschool graduates and college graduates. After my husband passed away, I became a part-time homeschool mom. Now I encourage younger moms to persevere in their high calling.

I remember when I went to the homeschool conventions filled with big name motivational speakers but I always felt that there was no way I could measure up to what they were doing, so I was always left feeling more overwhelmed than encouraged by those experiences.

I longed to hear from real moms who were finding solutions to making their homeschool work for their particular family situation, budget, and learning styles. I longed for more information on managing the day to day then teaching the academics.

I hated coming home exhausted and feeling like I couldn’t absorb another piece of information. I didn’t like choosing between two workshops I didn’t want to miss. All these objections have been solved by:

The Ultimate Homeschool Expo is everything I longed for and MUCH, MUCH more. The Ultimate Expo has something for everyone and for all Families. You will find speakers talking about topics of interest to ALL FAMILIES. Read more details below:

There are no large crowds! No outrageous gas bills! No makeup! No babysitters! No parking miles away! No expensive trips or hotel stays! No walking for blocks and blocks! No lugging big loads of books around! No expensive trips or hotel stays! No rushing around so you can catch the vendors, yet missing the wonderful workshops!

In fact! No missing ANY workshops! Look at this sampling of speakers that will appeal to all Families including those who have a baby on the way!

I spent a large portion of my time last week moving kitchen essentials into my camp kitchen and boxing up the non-essentials from my “old” kitchen. The picture below shows my kitchen table, working counter top with a hot plate, electric tea kettle, and storage for silverware, mixing bowls, and pots and pans.

The right corner of the camp kitchen contains an old computer desk that I used for writing ebooks and newsletters when Duane was still living. Now I have my bible, laptop, home telephone and answering machine located here. To the right of the main eating table (outside the picture) is a very old set of file drawers that are doubling as a counter to house my microwave/convection oven combo, an airpot being used as a faucet for cold drinking water, and my beloved Bosch.

Along the left side of my camp kitchen facing the window is my entire family library with a banquet table set up in front for my cutting board, utensil storage, and dish washing station. The trash can is in front of the banquet table.

I now have my dining room, family library, kitchen, and desk area tucked into about a 10 X 12 foot space. It’s all very cozy but surprisingly functional.

Mary and I accomplished our Easter dinner without my beloved Bosch and grain mill. Instead, we invited a family friend to join us for dinner in our downstairs “camp kitchen/cabin”.

Demolition began in my old kitchen on Thursday so we had a simple dinner cooked on a hot plate in stages. Pictures will follow soon.

Now, through Mother’s Day, May 10, you can invest in a Bosch Universal Plus and Nutrimill and save nearly $200. The combination price is $549.99. With the tax deadline fast approaching, I know many readers are awaiting their return so they can invest in a mill and mixer. Don’t miss this once a year savings event!

Last week I talked about the best way to address emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, in drinking water.

Many people wrote to me asking me to clarify what the benefit of an R/O (Reverse Osmosis) Drinking Water System is, and how they can know which type of system is best for their family.

Today, I want to clarify the pros and cons of Reverse Osmosis water purification technology.

First of all, it is a HUGE misconception to think any R/O system will remove all known contaminants. R/O technology does not even remove chlorine nor most chemicals in water.

R/O systems are best known for removing minerals and were developed for desalination of seawater aboard Naval vessels. R/O technology will also remove cysts and bacteria.

Most R/O systems are combined with other technologies, that is, they include another filtering medium such as a solid carbon filter to remove the chemicals as well as chlorine, chlorine disinfection by-products, etc.

A two-page brochure called, The Challenge compares all the major drinking water technologies and shows which contaminant groups each is able to remove. This flier also shows you where to get more information about addressing the water purification problems unique to your home.

The cost of maintaining an R/O system is higher because you have to replace sediment filters, solid carbon filters and the R/O membrane on a regular basis to make sure it is working properly.

Most homeowners on city water do not need an R/O system because they usually
do not have bacteria or harmful minerals in their water that only R/O
will address. In general, the only time an R/O system is needed is
when the water is high in harmful minerals such as sodium or nitrates.

R/O systems, because they remove all the minerals from the water, create an acidic water which, as it goes through the body, tends to make the body more acidic. Some health researchers believe this acidic condition may be a precursor to degenerative disease.

Also, as this water goes through the body, it has been demonstrated on laboratory animals to pull minerals from the body.

We could sell hundreds of Multi-Pure R/O systems but we don’t believe in over – selling or selling a product that is more expensive than is necessary or that is not needed.

A solid carbon filter is more than sufficient for most drinking water issues and shows the most hope of addressing emerging contaminants, according to The Water Quality Association.

The Multi-Pure Solid Carbon Drinking Water System is a superior choice at a better price, in my opinion, because it has been certified to remove more contaminants of health concern than any other solid carbon system on the market according to third party, not-for-profit testing done by NSF, Intl. (nsf.org)

There is NO ONE BEST system for all circumstances. As a general rule, solid carbon technology is the best choice if you are on city water, however.

What Are the Questions Your Should Ask When Buying a Drinking Water System?

RESPONSE TO AP REPORT ON DRUGS IN WATER

I received the following information from the leading manufacturer of solid carbon block drinking water filters to the story about Pharmaceuticals in water today. I hope you will read it, and realize there is no need for alarm or fear. Prudent homemakers will invest in the most effective drinking water system on the market, which fortunately is very reasonably priced.

Multi-Pure International is responding to a report by the Associated Press (AP) regarding widespread contamination of public drinking water supplies by pharmaceutical drugs. Multi-Pure has been aware of the issue of these drugs making their way into public water supplies for
several years.

However, NSF International, the leading certifying body in the
industry, does not have established test protocols for
pharmaceuticals; and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
has not established allowable limits for any over-the-counter or
prescription drugs found in drinking water supplies. Multi-Pure,
and all other drinking water treatment manufacturers cannot make
any NSF certified claims to remove pharmaceuticals from water.

However, Multi-Pure can assure its customers that they use the
industry’s most widely certified filter system on the market,
which outperforms all other NSF Certified drinking water systems
in terms of contaminant reduction. Multi-Pure has led the
industry in introducing new technologies to address emerging
contaminants found in our nation’s water supplies.

The AP report also cites bottled water as not being a safe
alternative, as it is often processed and repackaged tap water.

The AP report names reverse osmosis as being effective at
removing “virtually all pharmaceutical contaminants,” but does
not cite any test data to substantiate this claim.

Since 1970 Multi-Pure International has been an industry leader
in high performance drinking water filters for home or office.
Multi-Pure was the leading developer of carbon block water
filters and was the first manufacturer to gain NSF Std. 53
certification for the reduction of many contaminants such as
Lead, PCBs, Arsenic V, and Toxaphene.
